Entry Requirements

You’ll need two Highers at grades A-C (or equivalent) including Maths and either English or Physics.

You’ll need to be comfortable operating at heights and have a driving licence to get to and around the site.

What you’ll be doing

Our four-year Operation and Maintenance (O&M) Apprenticeship programme offers the opportunity for on-the-job learning and unique work experiences. Throughout your course, you’ll see how your studies relate to real life Renewable’s operations scenarios, from the principals of Wind Energy and Power Engineering to Electrical, Mechanical and Hydraulic theory. You’ll develop your hand skills through practical work tasks on our fleet of onshore wind turbines, helping bring your learning to life.

Health and Safety is our number one priority and from day one you’ll be taught the fundamentals, enabling you to keep yourself and your colleagues safe. You’ll be introduced to the Wind Turbine Safety Rules and the Electrical and Mechanical 4th Edition Safety Rules (High Voltage), electrical machine principles for motors and transformers, including DC, single phase and three phase motors. And our experienced technicians will mentor you, teaching you how these relate to our turbines. You’ll learn about electrical power supply systems, such as power quality, power system faults and improving power system efficiency so that you can assist with the operation and maintenance of our windfarms.

Throughout your course, you’ll see how your studies relate to both traditional and current engineering methods, building the foundations of your career as a technician. And at the end of the programme, you’ll be ready to become an Operations Technician.

You’ll need two Highers at grades A-C (or equivalent) including Maths and either English or Physics. You’ll be working on our turbines which can be up to 90 metres high, so you’ll need to be comfortable operating at heights. Most of our windfarms aren’t accessible by public transport, including Whitelee, so you must have a driving licence to get to and around the site.
