Where you’ll be working
SP Energy Networks
Our energy landscape is going through a time of profound change. A challenge touching every part of our society, we need to eradicate carbon emissions to halt the effects of climate change. We need to change how we live our lives and replace the use of fossil fuels for transport and heat.
Electricity will be at the heart of the solution, through electric vehicles and heat pumps. And with more renewables generation and other technologies connected to the electricity grid than ever before, it’s our role to make sure we create a more efficient, cleaner, greener network to accommodate this increase in demand.
Within SP Energy Networks, we are focusing on harnessing technology and innovation to create the networks of the future. With distribution networks designed for predictable, stable demand, it’s vital we upgrade our network to create the flexibility required to cope with the extensive changes to electricity demand, generation, and consumer behaviour. Through technology and innovation, we will enable a consumer-led revolution in the use and operation of our system. It will undergo the biggest changes to its design and operation for over half a century; and you can be part of it.
We know people are central to building a better future, quicker, and we need talented, hardworking and flexible people to join us.
What you’ll be doing
Within the Real Time Systems (RTS) Team, we combine SCADA information sourced directly from the electricity network with customer calls and smart metering information. Creating a digital twin of the electricity network, we maintain a model for visualisation and control purposes. The scope and complexity of these systems are continuously evolving as we aim to improve our customer service and manage the smart grid that is emerging to accommodate renewable electricity in the drive to Net Zero.
As an RTS Degree Apprentice, you’ll be immersed in our digital world right from the start. We’ll help you develop your understanding of Linux and Microsoft operating systems, relational databases, graphical editing tools and computer networking. Guided by your experienced colleagues, you’ll gain the skills to provide expert support to our Control Centre to minimise the impact of faults, maintenance and new installations on our customers, stakeholders and communities. We engage with a wide range of organisations, and you’ll play a vital role in liaising with external support organisations. Through maintenance and incident progression, you’ll help ensure the availability of the systems that support an evolving electricity network.
Throughout your course, we’ll give you the opportunity to relate your studies to real world scenarios that will compliment your learning. And at the end of the programme, you’ll be ready to become a First Line Support Engineering with a starting salary of £36,648.
